Frequently asked questions

If your question is not here, call 07 823 0472 and we will talk it through.

What kinds of plants does Fronds grow?

We are a New Zealand nursery specialising in native and exotic ferns, including tree ferns (ponga) and ground ferns. Alongside the ferns we grow a range of NZ natives and shrubs, specimen trees, and fruit and citrus trees such as lemons, mandarins, oranges, limes, grapefruit, feijoa, olives and more.

Do you supply ponga (tree ferns) in pots and troughs?

Yes. As well as established tree ferns we supply ponga in pots and troughs, which makes them easier to place, move and establish in a new garden or landscape planting.

Can I buy specimen trees for a landscape project?

Yes. We grow and select specimen trees for form, scale and presence, so a single tree can define a space. They suit both home gardens and larger landscape projects, and we are happy to talk through what will work for your site.

Do you sell fruit and citrus trees?

Yes. We carry a seasonal range of fruit and citrus trees, including lemons, limes, mandarins, oranges and grapefruit, plus feijoa, olive, cherry and crab apple among others. Availability changes through the season, so it is worth checking current stock with us.

When is the best time to plant ferns and natives in New Zealand?

Autumn and spring are generally the kindest times to plant, when the soil is warm and moisture is more reliable. Avoid planting into hard frost or the peak of a dry summer, and keep new plants well watered while they establish.

Do you supply home gardeners as well as landscapers and growers?

Both. We supply home gardeners looking for a few plants as well as landscapers, growers and trade customers needing larger quantities. Get in touch with your list and we can help you plan what you need.

Where are you based and can you help with supply further afield?

We are based in Cambridge in the Waikato. As well as serving the local region we supply ferns and plants for landscaping projects more widely across New Zealand. Contact us to talk through quantities, timing and getting plants to your site.

How do I care for a newly planted tree fern?

Keep the trunk and crown damp, especially over the first summer, as tree ferns take much of their moisture through the trunk. Plant in shelter from harsh wind and hot afternoon sun, mulch around the base, and water regularly until the fern is well established.
